Protecting the environment is one of the main challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. The city of Tetovo in Macedonia has been one of the most polluted cities in Europe in recent years and the air pollution level has risen 20 times beyond the European limits.
The local population for a long time has not been aware of the level of pollution and the consequences that arise from it. In order to change this sad state of affairs, we created the movement Eco Guerilla and since then it has organized a series of activities such as mass protests, publicity campaigns and intense lobbying in international organisations.
During the course of these activities, the members of the movement have received threats from the government which instead of fulfilling its legal duties to protect the environment and the life of its citizens, it continued to tolerate the work of a factory that is the worst pollutant in the country.
Moreover, due to the fact that some high governmental officials have close business ties with the owners of the factory, the government has given priority to the profit of some individuals and it has sacrificed the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens. Although recourse to legal remedies has been utilised, it has proved fruitless due to the politicization and corruption of the judiciary. The government’s justification that the closure of this pollutant would cause economic and social crisis influenced a small part of the population, whereas the campaigns of Eco Guerrila used the emotional element to express the deadly consequences of this level of pollution, and it succeeded in increasing the awareness on the seriousness of this problem.
